TYPES OF BRACES

Traditional · Metal

Metal brackets are the most common type of bracket.  They are made of metal allowing for great strength in a low profile bracket – meaning the bracket sticks out from your teeth less making it very comfortable!  Small colored rubber bands are used to keep the wire in the bracket.  You can pick as many (or as few) colors as you have brackets and change them every time you come in!

Clear · Ceramic

Clear brackets are a popular alternative and most commonly used for adults. We use the Radiance ceramic or the 3M Clarity bracket. For this bracket, a small clear rubber band is used to keep the wire in the bracket (similar as with the metal braces). There is a possibility that the rubber bands that hold the wire into the bracket may stain. This happens especially with certain foods like coffee, tea, red wine, mustard, and curry. But don’t fret, we change your clear ties out at each visit to keep your braces looking clear. You also have the option of choosing a different color rubber band (such as sliver or gray) that won’t show staining as much.

Wires

Whether you choose clear or metal braces, we progress through different sizes and shapes of wires to move your teeth. Initially, when your teeth are most misaligned, we place a small round wire. These wires are also temperature sensitive; they work the best when they are the same temperature as your body. When the wires are cold, they are less active. This means that if you drink something cool, you can temporarily take some of the tension out of your wire and make your braces more comfortable. (Who knew? Science can be magical!) We work our way through several different wires, usually finishing in a rectangular, stiff wire so that, if needed, we can place bends in the wire to move your teeth to the exact position they need to be in - both for your bite and function, and to achieve your specific esthetic goals.

3M Clarity® · Aligners

Many people want to fix something about their teeth, but don’t want to get braces.  For some people, aligner treatment is a great option.  Sometimes treatment may be more complex, and other types of treatment (like braces) would best correct the problems.  There are also very simple problems that can be fixed with a retainer or other kind of aligners that  may be more cost effective.  The only way to know for sure what will work for you is to be seen by an orthodontist.

Retainer Treatment

Sometimes we can move your teeth simply with a retainer that you sleep in at night! It always depends on your goals, but often rotating upper front teeth can be achieved this way. We understand that sometimes people want to improve their smile a little without going thru braces or aligner treatment. That’s when limited treatment with a retainer can be helpful.
